Scott McCloud’s Zot Comic
This is one of Scott’s original characters. The format is particular to the web interface and as such is creative, intuitive and fun.

From kottke.org:
The Digital Journalist has launched a photo blog modeled after The Big Picture. Well done. I’ve followed this site on and off for years but always found it too difficult to navigate through to find the photography, which is shot by top-notch photojournalists and is amazing. Nice to see the photography put front and center. Case in point: this wonderful selection of sports photos by Walter Iooss Jr., punctuated by stories of the athletes he was photographing (Tiger Woods, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, etc.).

Aliens, Everywhere! Run!
No, not really. But you never know whats out there! On a serious note, here are some abstract and very interesting images that were taken by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. It was launched in 2005 from Cape Canaveral in search of evidence of water on mars.
The images that have been taken have been featured on Time’s photogallery. They are extremely abstract in their nature, yet inspiring and full of mystery all at once. It’s unfortunate some of the images aren’t higher resolution as they would have made great Wallpaper images.
If you’d like the curl to download them, it can be found after the jump.

2008 Olympics Opening Ceremony
If you have yet to take a look at the opening ceremony from the 2008 Beijing Olympics you are surely missing out on some wonderful theatrics. Granted, this post is a bit late but due to the downtime of the site I think it’s better to post it late then never. Boston.com has an interesting photo-blog, The Big Picture, where some astounding images are posted of the major events around the world. True to this fashion, they were amongst the first to post images from the Beijing Olympic Opening Ceremony for 2008.
Historic Cartography
Exploration is part of human nature. Whether it be outer space, the ocean, the internet, or our past, people like to explore the unknown. Maps provide a lot of insight into the historical past of the world and what better a resource then that of antique, historic, maps to explore. The David Rumsey Collection does just that. With over 18,000 maps one could lose themselves for quite some time exploring the site.
According to the site, the collection focuses primarily on rare 18th and 19th century North American and South American maps and other cartographic materials.
In addition everything from North American maps, Europe, Asia and more is listed in the vast directory. With the use of tools like cURL, we are able to make extracting maps from the site, at generally high resolutions, pretty easy. Since the maps are generally listed numerically it makes it easy to use the -O switch that curl has to extract the data once we can determine the location of one file.
Milo Manara Adult Novelist Images
Those of you who are long time viewers of this blog will remember a post which Matt O’hara made showcasing the images of the Illustrator Milo Manara. Unfortunately, the content of that post is long gone.
This post will also serve as the first of many to be soon posted (and updated content posts) on the new site. If you have more information, links or comments, please feel free to email us and we’ll set up an account for you so you can contribute. Eventually comments will come online as well once we are sure we can combat the spammers effectively.
